What Jock Knew

February 27, 2009

jock2At first sight this campaign by some Rangers supporters (and more recently by those of Hearts) to sully the reputation of one of Scotland¹s greatest managers appears baffling. Why even make the effort almost a quarter of a century after his death - on active service with the Scottish national side in Cardiff?

Perhaps some within the Ibrox club’s support simply cannot accept that a player generally recognised as coming from a Protestant background in Lanarkshire could sign for Celtic and find himself appreciated as a steady centre-half and inspiring captain … would lead Celtic to a League and Scottish Cup double in 1953/54 … and would be a central figure in Celtic’s astonishing Coronation Cup triumph in the summer of 1953.

Perhaps they could not accept the heart-felt words of one of their own who said: “Unlike many other Celts, I cannot claim that Celtic was my first love … but I can say that it will be my last love.”

Perhaps they could never accept nor forgive the fact that as a manager his Celtic side totally dominated Scottish football and was a major force on the larger European scene. It must have been hard to take … and it must have been galling to admit that efforts made by backroom insiders to tempt him to take over at Ibrox failed utterly.

2009 Predictions by Jungle Bhoys answer to Mystic Meg

February 27, 2009

Welcome To Paradise’s resident Mystic Meg (well he does disappear every time it’s his round) has saved us all the bother of keeping up to date with news for the rest of the year by getting his crystal balls out and giving us a summary of the main events in 2009.

For a joke we took his predictions to a friend and well known Glasgow bookie and he gave us evens on it all coming to fruition!

So read on…and don’t forget. You heard it here first!

Rangers - The Fascist Football Club

February 27, 2009

rangers_nazi_salute_israel_2‘Go home. Get back to your own country’. It’s the classic mantra of the racist. And it’s the latest mantra of the hate-filled hordes that infest the home stands at Ibrox and the away stands wherever Rangers fans follow follow their team. Although it’s questionable whether they ever frequent any of these venues to actually watch Rangers FC play football. They seem, to many observers, far more intent on spewing forth all manner of hateful dirges that have no connection with football whatsoever.

And just when you thought you’d heard it all with the campaign to desecrate the name of the greatest manager that Scotland ever produced, a man who literally died for his country, they do what you don’t think is possible: they manage to sink even lower. Now it’s open season on the Irish and all of Eire’s sons and daughters. Including those - of all creeds - who were disastrously affected by the potato famine (An Gorta Mór or An Drochshaol) in which at least one million people died between 1845 – 1852 and the population of Ireland was reduced by an estimated 20-25 percent.

The reaction of Rangers fans? Their latest ‘banter’ reminds us that the famine’s over and asks Eire’s children in Scotland, why don’t you go home? Banter. That’s how they’re describing this. The Chief Executive of Rangers, Martin Bain calls it a tit-for-tat wind-up. In a letter handed out to Rangers fans before their home match against Motherwell on Sunday 21 September (more than seven months after this vile chant was first heard at Scottish football grounds) Bain failed to condemn the chant. Indeed in his opening sentence, hands wringing, he claimed it had been ‘a difficult week for Rangers’.

Tommy Burns RIP

February 27, 2009

burnsripMay 2008 will go down in the annals of Celtic’s history as one of the most turbulent ever with the untimely death of one of our favourite sons followed by one of the greatest comebacks ever witnessed in the Scottish game.

The connection between the two cannot be underestimated as Tommy provided the inspiration to push us over the finishing line for 3 In A Row just a week before the scenes of joy at Tannadice when we mourned his passing significantly at the home parish of the club.

The Jungle Bhoys were privileged to be amongst fan group representatives at the funeral on a day no Celtic fan will ever forget.

JUSTICE FOR THE 96

February 27, 2009

000c8fc8-db1a-1039-a1b880bfb6fa0000….say a prayer for those football fans who went to support their team and never came home. April 15th is the 19th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster when 96 Liverpool fans, young and old, died so tragically. Anyone who attended football matches throughout this era will know that it could have been any of us at nearly any ground.

One of the greatest pleasures of being a Celtic supporter is the people you meet and the friends you make along the way. Some of whom become lifetime soul mates whilst others may be casual acquaintances you share a pint with as you dissect every minute of the season so far. The guys from the Hillsborough Justice Campaign are the former and one of the highlights of last season for the Jungle Bhoys was meeting up with this sound group of Liverpool fans who have campaigned long and hard to get Justice for the 96, the Liverpool fans who died so tragically supporting their team in 1989.

Celebrating Celtic: 1988 - The Centenary Year

February 27, 2009

gw500h357Throughout our history the will to win and overcome all the odds to do so has been a theme from our inception. Whether it’s that first meeting in St Mary’s Hall to the Coronation Cup win in ‘53, Lisbon in ‘67 to the Centenary Season in ‘88 that never say die team spirit has been a part of our make up and part of the very fabric of our great club.

“Celebrating Celtic” over the next few issues of Welcome To Paradise will highlight for you some of those magical moments when we have defied all the odds to succeed. 1988 was one such example. To mark our 100th year we wanted nothing more than to celebrate our centenary year with a successful season that befitted our standing in the game.

Memories of the Jungle

February 27, 2009

the-jungleWell over a decade since I last set foot in the place, still to this day every time I smell cigarette smoke on my face it reminds me of one place and that’s the old Jungle at Celtic Park.

Having spent what seemed like the whole of the 80s and early 90s in that seething, swaying, singing and baying madhouse it is only now that I look back and consider how much of an effect it had on me, a young and impressionable, dyed in the wool Celtic fan who enjoyed every single second I spent there. From my earliest days to my more mature onset I, just like thousands like me, spent all week thinking of the one place where I longed to be, in the Jungle cheering on my beloved Celtic.
